More and more, social media is replacing traditional marketing in the wedding industry, but should it? Marketing Web cautions against Social Media for Social Media’s Sake. Some photographers are hopping on the bandwagon and don’t even know where it’s going. If you are one of those that created a Facebook business page or group, a Twitter account, a MySpace profile, blog or any other number of social media outlets make sure you are using them in a way that compliments your business. And don’t let it suck away so much time that you neglect your other marketing efforts. If your only clients are high school seniors then spending your time online may work for you, but not everyone is that connected, nor does everyone want to be. I live in front of my computer, but I still love an old fashioned catalog with pages I can turn.
So ask yourself why you are using social media. If your answer is “because every one else is” you need to come up with a better reason. Find out where your clients are and put your effort there, and for Pete’s sake give them something interesting! You don’t want to be the creepy photographer who never posts images and “likes” everything their clientele of teenage girls posts.
Learn how to use the tools you have. It is obvious to us heavy users when a newb comes along and doesn’t follow the etiquette.
And have what you need to back up your web presence. If your site, blog, and profiles are awesome, but the client meets you and you hand them a confusing price list in Times New Roman and one of 250 free business cards you just had printed they will be unimpressed, feel deceived and get back on that same social media tool and tell everyone what they think of you.

I think every photographer needs a game plan. For me Twitter is just a way to stay connected to my photographer friends and to find information that people tweet that is invaluable in research and marketing. Facebook is a great marketing tool if people are tagged in their wedding photographs and friends. It’s great viral marketing. My first question with social media is how much of this is “fun” vs. making money?
